A DIY Wedding Idea

Firstly, think about the colours and any theme you're planning on having for your winter wedding.

The temperature will need to be not much above freezing for the ice decorations to last awhile, so don't plan on making them if you're having an early spring or late autumn wedding as they'll just melt away too quickly.

You will need: Water (!), colourful winter berries, evergreen ferns, winter flowers, two waterproof and frostproof containers/bowls that will fit your freezer and fit one inside the other with about 10cm of room in between, tea lights. Remember that the outer container is what the shape of your candle will be.

To make the ice decorations, fill the larger container with water about halfway. Then place the smaller container inside, so that the water rises up in between. Top up the water level to about 2cm from the top.

Next scatter berries, leaves, ferns, flowers (or whatever you have decided use as decor) on the surface of the water. Pour in a little more water, about 1cm on the top.

Now carefully put the container in your freezer and let it remain until the whole ice decoration is completely frozen. You can leave it there until your wedding day and bring out just before the reception (the caterers may be able to keep it in a freezer until the last moment). Finally, remove the internal container and you'll see a scooped out part is left to insert a tea light. Then remove the external container and voila, you have an ice decoration. Place all along the exterior pathway and light the candle at the last possible minute.

You'll have a unique and personal ice decoration to light your way that is perfectly charming and a real talking point for your guests.
